HULL CITY RESERVES 2-2 SUNDERLAND RESERVES - LEAGUE CUP - 20/12/2011

Richard Garcia and James Harper were both on the scoresheet as Hull City Reserves twice came from behind to claim a 2-2 draw with Sunderland at North Ferriby on Tuesday night.

Seyi Olofinjana made his first competitive appearance since suffering a knee injury at the end of last season whilst on loan at Cardiff City and Garcia was also continuing his own comeback from a long term lay off as City fielded their most experienced reserve line up of the season.

Paul McShane was given much needed match time and Joe Dudgeon, Robbie Brady and Tom Cairney were also included in the side. Only Danny East, Sonny Bradley and Danny Emerton remained from the reserves previous game, a 4-1 win at Gateshead.

It took the Black Cats just five minutes to take the lead with Louis Laing heading past Adriano Basso from a corner and they could have doubled their lead when Oumare Tounkara was sent clear through the left channel but Bradley produced a good block which resulted in the ball lobbing perfectly into Basso's hands.

The Tigers first chance fell to Brady but he fired a left foot shot wide of the post.

The Tigers were struggling to create clear-cut opportunities but when they finally did they drew level in the 25th minute. East's cross from the right was flicked on by Emerton and Garcia poked a right foot shot low past Sunderland keeper Ben Wilson.

Dudgeon then crossed from the left but Emerton's far post header was held by Wilson.

Tounkara had a chance to regain the lead for the visitors when he only had Basso to beat but lobbed his effort well wide.

However, the Sunderland striker made no mistake on the half hour mark when he latched onto a punt forward, held off McShane's challenge and fired a right foot shot in off the post.

The Tigers got their second equaliser of the night in the 40th minute when Brady cut in from the right and although Wilson kept out his low left foot strike Harper rammed in the rebound.

The action for the first period was not yet over as in added on time City were reduced to ten men. Brady reacted to a foul with an elbow and the Manchester United loanee, who has only just returned from serving a three match ban for his sending off at Southampton, was shown a straight red card.

Even then, City almost went into the interval with a lead when Cairney's free kick fell for Garcia and his left foot strike hit the outside of the post.

With a numerical advantage, Sunderland were in the ascendancy at the start of the second period. Jordan Cook struck a right foot shot across the face of goal and then from Cook's cross Dudgeon diverted the ball past Basso but recovered in time to clear the off the line.

Basso held Laing's low drive and John Egan and Tounkara were both off target with headers.

The Tigers made a triple substitution in the 70th minute with Dudgeon, Olofinjana and Garcia all being withdrawn.

East and Emerton combined to create a chance for Cairney but his left foot strike from the edge of the box was held by Wilson.

The Black Cats had a final chance to win the game when Egan met a corner from the right but Basso blocked his header on the line and substitute Matt Mainwaring completed the clearance.

Hull City: Adriano Basso, Danny East, Joe Dudgeon (Matt Mainwaring 70), Seyi Olofinjana (Gavan Holohan 70), Paul McShane, Sonny Bradley, Robbie Brady, James Harper, Richard Garcia (Fran McCaffrey 70), Tom Cairney, Danny Emerton.

Subs Not Used: Rob Peet, Kealan Dillon.

Sunderland: Ben Wilson, Liam Marrs, Blair Adams (James Armstrong 79), Adam Reed, John Egan, Louis Laing, Roarie Deacon, Billy Knott (Brett Elliott 84), Oumare Tounkara, Craig Lynch, Jordan Cook.

Subs Not Used: Michael Liddle, Lewis King, Liam Bagnall.
