Blackburn Rovers Reserves 1-0 Hull City Reserves - 8/3/10

Hull City Reserves' winning run came to an end as they went down to the only goal of the game against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Monday night.

Both sides fielded relatively strong sides with Bernard Mendy, Seyi Olofinjana, Dean Marney, Jozy Altidore, Caleb Folan and Geovanni all being given a run out for the Tigers. Only John Leonard, Ibrahima Sonko, Liam Cooper and Kamel Ghilas remained from the previous starting line up which defeated Wigan Athletic 3-0.

Marney had the first chance for the Tigers after Ghilas and Geovanni had created the chance but his left foot shot was wide and Jackson Ramm put Rovers first opportunity high over the bar.

David Dunn saw a shot deflected for a corner and Junior Hoilett's overhead kick did not trouble Matt Duke.

Rovers had the ball in the net in the 21st minute when Franco Di Santo converted Hoilett's low cross but the referee's assistant already had his flag raised for offside against Hoilett.

Mendy and Geovanni were then both involved as City created a shooting chance for Marney but his shot deflected off Ghilas and went wide.

A good run from Hoilett saw him cut in from the left but he fired a right foot shot wide, whilst for City Sonko headed over from a Geovanni free kick.

Ghilas then drove a shot wide from 25 yards and Marney met Altidore's lay off on the edge of the box but hit his shot straight at Rovers keeper Jake Kean.

The best chance of the half came when Di Santo was sent clear but Sonko got back to block his shot. Rovers appeals for handball were dismissed by the referee.

Half Time: Blackburn Rovers Reserves 0 Hull City Reserves 0

Rovers were ahead within a minute of the re-start when City needlessly conceded possession and Dunn drove a right foot shot in off the base of the post from 25 yards.

Hoilett should have added a second almost immediately but he shot wide after being sent clear down the left.

Jason Lowe then smacked a right foot shot from the edge of the box against Duke's left hand post and the City keeper had to tip over a Josh Morris free kick as Rovers continued to have the upper hand in the second period.

Duke was again called into action to tip over Brett Emerton's curling right foot shot, whilst all City could muster was a Leonard shot that was blocked on the edge of the box.

Duke continued to be by far the busier of the two keepers and he produced a good block to deny Di Santo on yet another Rovers raid.

Cooper then broke forward from defence and found Nicky Featherstone but his left foot shot from outside the box was straight at Kean.

Mendy then had a shot saved as City finally applied some pressure in the closing minutes and the final chance saw Leonard back-heel a shot straight at Kean from close range.

Blackburn Rovers: Jake Kean, Jason Lowe, Jackson Ramm, Grant Hanley, Amine Linganzi, Josh Morris, Brett Emerton, David Dunn (Nick Blackman 76), Franco Di Santo, Yildiray Basturk, Junior Hoilett (Maceo Rigters 68).

Subs Not Used: Josh Swann, Michael Potts, Jason Banton.

Hull City: Matt Duke, John Leonard, Bernard Mendy, Seyi Olofinjana, Ibrahima Sonko, Liam Cooper, Kamel Ghilas, Dean Marney (Ryan Kendall 73), Caleb Folan (Nicky Featherstone 46), Jozy Altidore, Geovanni (Dean Deagle 58).
