Following his appointment in June 2010, Tigers manager Nigel Pearson identified free-agent James Harper as central to his plans for the 2010/11 npower Championship campaign.
After impressing during a brief trial period at the club's Cottingham-based training ground, James signed a two-year incentivised deal, beginning from August 2010.
Bringing both Championship and Premiership experience to the heart of the City midfield, James is a product of Arsenal's youth academy. Unable to break into the Gunners' senior side at the time, his debut in League football came whilst on a brief loan with Cardiff in January 2001.
Catching the eye whilst at Ninian Park, James secured a permanent switch to Reading in February of the same year. The midfielder quickly adapted to life in League One, and in his first full season at the Madejski Stadium he helped the Royals to automatic promotion.
An ever-present in the Reading side over the following campaigns, James enjoyed his second promotion with the Royals as they took the Championship by storm in 2005/06 under the Stewardship of Steve Coppell.
Taking the step up to the top-flight in his stride, James was one of the Royals' most consistent performers during their two years in the Premier League, scoring nine goals in the process - including a brace against Newcastle.
James' time with the Royals finally came to an end as he signed for Sheffield United in September 2009, in a deal that was extended until the end of the 2009/10 season four months later.
After picking up a metatarsal injury in a pre-season match against North Ferriby, James was unfortunately sidelined for the beginning of the Tigers' 2010/11 Championship campaign. Successfully negotiating his rehabilitation process, the midfielder eventually made his competitive debut for the club in October 2010, coming on as a substitute as the Tigers fell to 2-1 defeat at the hands of Portsmouth.
Since then James has enjoyed an extended run in the side, helping City to an eight-game unbeaten run over the months of November and December, as well as scoring his first goal for the club with a spectacular strike against former employers Reading.
