Nigel Pearson says the Tigers must give their travelling fans something to cheer about when they face local rivals Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
City travel to the Keepmoat Stadium targeting three points and Pearson wants his players to give the fans something to get excited about.
"We'll be taking a big following with us and we have an obligation to give those fans something to cheer about," said Pearson.
"I know they will get behind us but we've got to make sure they're happy with what we're trying to do. Our away form needs to improve, there's no doubt about that, and this is an opportunity to go and put that right.
"But we'll have to work very hard because this is a very competitive league.
"Doncaster have been a steady side in recent years and they play their style of football pretty well. We're looking forward to it and we'll give them respect, but it's up to us to go there and put in the type of performance that we're happy with."
Pearson believes there have been some encouraging signs during the opening three weeks of the season and he hopes City can now build on those.
"We've got some players who have come into the squad who bring something different. At the moment, it's still very much a case of finding out about the players, but I'm somebody who looks forward with optimism and I'm looking to make sure we get a good result on Saturday."
