Tigers Held By Glovers
The Tigers dropped down to second spot after failing to score for the first time at home this season in what was an enthralling 0-0 draw with Yeovil Town at the KC Stadium.
It was never going to be an easy game against last season's Conference champions and so it proved as the Glovers came to attack City right from the start.
Hugo Rodrigues went the closest for Gary Johnson's side as his header came off the top of the bar but it was Yeovil's Chris Weale that was the busier of the two keepers.
Jason Price, Stuart Elliott and Ian Ashbee all came close to scoring for the Tigers but found Weale in superb form.
Peter Taylor made two changes from the side that lost 3-1 at the McAlpine Stadium last week.
Paul Musselwhite was recalled to the starting eleven after Alan Fettis was unavailable due to a dead leg.
Danny Allsopp had also failed to recover in time from his groin injury and Jamie Forrester replaced the Australian striker for his first start of the season whilst Dean Keates and Danny Webb returned to the squad to take the places on the bench vacated by Musselwhite and Forrester.
Yeovil looked dangerous straight from the start and Gavin Williams tested the City defence with a deep cross.
Jake Edwards was waiting at the back post but it was just too high for the striker and City cleared their lines.
Yeovil attacked again and produced the first shot of the game after 4 minutes.
After some good midfield work the ball came to Paul Terry thirty yards out.
The ball sat up nicely for terry but his shot sailed well over without testing Musselwhite.
City then attacked themselves and created an opening down the right hand side.
Forrester picked up the ball and ran at the Yeovil defence but the small striker hit his shot straight at a Yeovil defender.
City then won their first corner of the game after 8 minutes.
Andy Dawson floated the ball right into the danger zone but a Yeovil head managed to reach the ball before any Tigers player could get to it.
City were almost gifted the lead just two minutes later.
Chris Weale made a mess up of his clearance and the ball fell towards Ben Burgess on the edge of the box.
Burgess controlled it and struck it well but his effort went over the bar much to the relief of Weale in the Yeovil goal.
City were almost in again after 12 minutes. Forrester beat the offside trap and turned to play in Stuart Green on the edge of the box.
Green made a darting run into the box but just couldn't control the ball as the goal was looming.
Yeovil came straight back at the Tigers though and Nick Crittenden hit a good effort on from 30 yards but it went well wide.
Stuart Elliott was then called upon to do some defensive work as the Northern Irish winger headed a deep cross behind for a corner.
The ball was swung in but Delaney jumped the highest to clear the ball.
Yeovil won another corner minutes later when Dawson and Delaney blocked a Kevin gall cross.
Lee Johnson swung the ball but just as it looked as though Yeovil had a chance the referee blew up for a foul after some pushing in the box.
City then created another good chance with 24 minutes gone on the clock.
Green played the ball to Forrester just inside his own half.
Forrester collected the ball and turned to play a lovely ball to release Jason Price down the right.
Price cut in from the right wing and created the space for a shot but again Weale wasn't tested as Price saw his effort sail over the bar.
Musselwhite was the brought into action as he was forced to parry an Edwards behind for a corner.
Rodrigues curled the ball but it went straight across top the right hand side.
Johnson lined up a half volley but his effort was blocked and sent behind for another corner.
Johnson sent the ball in but it was too long again and went out for a Tigers throw-in.
City were then awarded a free kick just inside the Yeovil half for handball.
Delaney rolled the ball towards Dawson who curled the ball in towards penalty spot but nobody could get on the end of it and the boll went straight into the arms of Weale.
City then missed a glorious opportunity to take the lead after 37 minutes.
Price crossed a beautiful ball over from the right side towards Burgess.
Sliding in to try and reach the ball Burgess connected but the tall striker couldn't hit the back of the net after some pressure from Rodrigues.
City were now passing the ball well and this led to Forrester almost setting up another chance.
Ian Ashbee picked out the little striker but his cross was smothered by Weale.
City did create another chance just a minute later.
A good advantage was played by the referee and the ball found its way to Richard Hinds.
Hinds played in a deep cross that was met by Burgess at the back post.
Burgess headed the ball down towards Elliott who turned and hit it well but again the ball went over the bar without testing Weale.
HALF TIME: Tigers 0 Yeovil 0
City were awarded a free kick after 47 minutes when Rodrigues was pulled up for handball.
Rodrigues was cautioned for the offence before Green curled in the free kick.
Elliott rose the highest to meet the ball and headed well but Weale comfortably
saved the effort.
Yeovil then should have at least made Musselwhite work just two minutes later.
Gall took the ball in his stride and should have released Williams who would have been free on goal but the striker under hit his pass and Delaney cleared.
It was then end to end action as both sides looked for the opener.
City broke quickly after Delaney cleared to Burgess who in turn flicked it on to Forrester inside the centre circle.
Forrester spread it wide towards Price whose cross was blocked but the ball came straight back to him.
Price then played it inside but the pass was intercepted and Yeovil broke.
Edwards sprinted forward but wasted a good opportunity as the City defence managed to clear.
Burgess then had another header that just went wide after 56 minutes.
Minutes later Ashbee got the crowd on their feet as his long range effort seemed to be destined for the goal until Weale stuck out a hand and turned it behind for a corner.
Nothing came from the corner but it was Yeovil who nearly took the lead after 59 minutes.
Johnson floated in a free kick from just inside the City half. Musselwhite decided to come for the ball but Rodrigues beat the City keeper top the ball and agonisingly saw his header hit the top of the bar.
Yeovil manager Gary Johnson was then forced into making his first change as Rodrigues came off to be replaced Jamie Gosling after 62 minutes.
The City players were then claiming a penalty in the next attack.
After a fumble in the box the ball broke to Green who seemed to be fouled by a mixture of Weale and a Yeovil defender but nothing was given despite the protests from the City players.
Just a minute later Green was fouled again in what seemed a definite penalty this time but the referee gave nothing once more.
Forrester was going through on goal but a great tackle from a Yeovil defender saw the ball brake free on the edge of the box.
Running in from the midfield Green picked the ball up but was taken from behind by Terry Skiverton as he entered the box.
The ball fell to Elliott after Green had gone down but his shot was blocked and went behind for a corner.
Dawson swung the ball in but a clash of heads saw play halted as Yeovil cleared their lines.
City won another corner just minutes later and a great delivery was met by Elliott.
The Northern Irishman beat the Yeovil defence top the ball but his header went just over.
The Tigers then couldn't believe they hadn't taken the lead after 71 minutes.
Green was played the ball down the right flank and he produced a superb cross to the back post.
Price was coming in at the back and met it perfectly but a stunning one handed save from Weale kept the scores level.
Yeovil then made their second change of the game after 72 minutes.
Lee Elam came on to replace Nick Crittenden.
Peter Taylor also made his first change of the game at the same time.
Ryan France was brought on to replace Ben Burgess.
France almost had an immediate impact as his run down the right provided Green with a shooting chance.
Green connected well enough but his strike hit a Terry before it could get to Weale in the Yeovil goal.
City were then awarded a free kick as France caused problems before being pulled down.
Green played the ball in but Terry rose well to clear the ball for a throw-in.
Elliott almost gave City the lead after 78 minutes. Forrester flicked on a cross and found Elliott in space.
Elliott took it first time on the volley and connected well but guided it wide without causing Weale any problems.
Marc Joseph was then cautioned for taking out Gall as Yeovil went on a counter attack after 80 minutes.
Elliott then wasted another golden opportunity to give the Tigers the lead.
Ashbee picked out Elliott with a pass that fooled the Yeovil backline.
Elliott controlled it and beat the closest defender to give himself some space but just as he was about to let fly he lost his balance and the chance had gone.
Yeovil keeper Weale then produced another world class save to keep out Ashbee this time.
A Green corner was cleared but only to the feet of Ashbee on the edge of the box.
The Tigers captain took a touch and hit a blistering half volley that seemed destined for the goal but a diving Weale got a hand to the ball and tipped it over.
Peter Taylor then made his second change after 87 minutes. Danny Webb replaced Jamie Forrester in the Tigers attack.
City were then awarded a free kick on the left after Elliott was taken out.
Dawson crossed it in but a foul had already been given before Webb hit the post for a yard out.
Yeovil then made their third and final change a minute later. Kirk Jackson came on to replace Jake Edwards.
The Tigers almost stole all three points in injury time through France.
The winger was played in by Green down the right hand side and took it into the Yeovil penalty area.
France hit a right foot effort that beat Weale but went past the post as well.
