Youngsters Extend Winning Run

Posted on: Mon 06 Sep 2010

Hull City Juniors gained at least a small amount of revenge for the first team's defeat a week earlier when they won 3-1 at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Billy Russell's side showed two changes from the side that started the 4-0 win over Burton Albion. Danny East was forced off at half time in that game with a hamstring problem and so his replacement Jules Gabbiadini continued at right back. Fran McCaffrey was back from international duty and came in for Lewis Clarkson.

Doncaster enjoyed the majority of the play in the opening minutes but the Tigers took the lead with their first attack of the game in the sixth minute. Joe Cooper's through ball gave Ray Ford the chance to outpace the Rovers defence, round keeper Jordan Bradshaw and roll the ball into the empty net.

Ford's quickly taken free kick then sent Paul McElroy away down the left and from his cross Cooper's header was saved by Bradshaw.

Doncaster drew level in the 26th minute when Stephen Hoyle held off Fraser Papprill's challenge and crossed for Paddy Mullen who probably didn't make the kind of contact he intended but it was enough to send the ball over Bill Ward and into the net.

Brett Lucas then headed over from Brad Grayson's corner before Ward had to produce a superb flying save to tip Grayson's 25 yarder around the post.

Conor Townsend was off target with a left foot strike from distance before Ward was again called into action, going low to his left to turn away Liam Wakefield's header from a James Husband corner.

Grayson's free kick from the left flew narrowly wide with no Rovers player able to apply a decisive touch, whilst for the Tigers Ford headed over from Gabbiadini's free kick.

As in the first period, City scored with their first attack of the half. Bradshaw came out to claim Gabbiadini's 50th minute free kick but was beaten to the ball by Jonathan Margetts who headed into an unguarded net.

Rovers replied with Jordan Ball firing over from outside the box and McElroy's left foot strike was off target for the Tigers.

Ward needed two attempts to gather Grayson's free kick before City added a third in the 67th minute. Gabbiadini's long ball was perfect for Ford to race onto and round Bradshaw before firing a left foot shot into the net.

A Townsend throw then allowed Ford to lay the ball off for McElroy whose low drive was held by Bradshaw.

Robert Oldham shot high and wide for the hosts and Grayson's shot on the turn was also wide but the Tigers had already done enough to claim the three points.
