Late Show Robs City

Posted on: Sat 20 Mar 2010

Hull City were just two minutes away from claiming their first away win of the season on Saturday afternoon, but ended up losing 3-2 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Two goals from Caleb Folan appeared to be enough for three points until Portsmouth's late show saw City get nothing.

Iain Dowie made three changes to the Hull City side for his first game as the Club's temporary Football Management Consultant.

Paul McShane replaced the injured Kamil Zayatte in the middle of the back four while Kevin Kilbane came in for the suspended George Boateng.

The surprise on the teamsheet was the inclusion of Caleb Folan in the starting eleven. Folan came in for Jozy Altidore.

Andy Dawson captained the side.

Speculation that Portsmouth would field a weakened side following the deduction of nine Premier League points proved to be wide of the mark.

City almost made a great start when Kilbane, playing down the left, crossed for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink but his header came back off the post.

At the other end, Marc Wilson fired a free kick just wide of Boaz Myhill's right-hand post.

Tommy Smith saw a shot deflect just wide on 22 minutes, leading to a Portsmouth corner. They worked it short, but Nadir Belhadj was off target with a shot from the edge of the box.

Jimmy Bullard began to grow into the game and he was unlucky with a couple of shots that curled wide.

The second of those shots took a deflection and from the corner, City took a 27th-minute lead. Bullard's delivery was only cleared as far as Craig Fagan on the edge of the box and his low volley deflected off Folan in the six-yard area and into the net. Both players were left to argue whose goal it actually was, but the travelling black and army didn't care as they celebrated a rare lead away from home.

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James was punished for handling the ball outside of the penalty area soon after and shown a yellow card, but City couldn't make anything of the free kick.

Dawson produced a timely tackle to prevent Smith getting a shot away on 37 minutes, resulting in a Portsmouth corner from which they equalised. The ball was swung over to the far post where Smith eventually bundled the ball home.

As City looked to restore their lead, Dean Marney fired just wide from 20 yards.

Half Time: Tigers 1-1 Portsmouth

Fagan went close soon after half time with a long-range drive that just cleared the crossbar.

Dawson produced a great challenge to deflect Smith's effort over in the 63rd minute and the home side couldn't make anything of the resulting corner.

City's first change saw Nick Barmby replace Vennegoor of Hesselink before they were forced into a second with Dawson picking up an injury. Richard Garcia was his replacement with Kilbane dropping to left back.

Garcia made an immediate impact, playing Folan through to score his second goal of the game. The striker took his time before sliding the ball past James.

As City looked to hold on to their lead, Myhill was booked for time wasting.

It was a tactic that didn't work as Portsmouth levelled with just two minutes to go as Jamie O'Hara curled a free kick into the top corner.

And just a minute later, Portsmouth went in front. Belhadj got away from Garcia before squaring to Kanu who tucked the ball under Myhill and into the net.
