Hull City surrendered a half time lead given to them by Geovanni to lose 4-1 against Wigan Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Tigers made seven changes to the starting eleven with only Boaz Myhill, Bernard Mendy, Kamil Zayatte and Richard Garcia retaining their places.

Steven Mouyokolo and captain Kevin Kilbane joined Mendy and Zayatte in defence. The midfield consisted of Garcia, Peter Halmosi, Tom Cairney and Geovanni while Kamel Ghilas and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink started up front.

Youth team striker Mark Cullen earned a first senior call up to take a place on the bench while youngster Jamie Devitt was also on the bench after returning from a loan spell at Shrewsbury.

City made much of the early running, but it was Wigan who came closest to opening the scoring when Scott Sinclair's fifth-minute cross floated over Myhill before dropping on top of the crossbar.

The home side had another chance on 18 minutes when James McCarthy's shot brought a save out of Myhill.

City's first real chance came when Garcia's cross from the right was met by the head of Ghilas at the near post, but the ball landed on the roof of the net.

Zayatte needed treatment for a head wound after producing a good defensive header inside his own six-yard box but returned to the action after a couple of minutes.

Zayatte recovered sufficiently to help his side take the lead on 35 minutes, earning a free kick on the edge of the Wigan box after a strong run took him past three would-be tacklers. Geovanni took it and curled the ball into the top corner of Mike Pollitt's goal.

Cairney almost doubled the lead two minutes later, bending a shot just wide of the post from 20 yards.

City began the second half on the front foot with Vennegoor of Hesselink heading over from Garcia's cross.

But Wigan were level on 47 minutes as half time substitute Charles N'Zogbia latched onto a through ball before firing across Myhill and into the net.

N'Zogbia almost added a second seven minutes later when he cut in from the right, but Myhill was equal to his shot.

Whatever was said in the Wigan dressing room at half time certainly worked and they took the lead on 63 minutes. McCarthy picked up possession on the edge of the City box before seeing his shot deflect past Myhill and into the net.

It was 3-1 two minutes later. Wigan worked a short corner for N'Zogbia who cut inside, held off the challenge of Halmosi and curled a shot into the far bottom corner of the net.

That prompted City's first change as Cullen came on to make his senior debut, replacing Ghilas. That was soon followed by the introduction of George Boateng for Halmosi.

City looked for a way back into the game and Cairney was unlucky to see his shot deflect over the bar.

But the away defence was falling apart and only a superb double save from Myhill prevented Wigan from extending their lead.

City's final change saw Jozy Altidore replace Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Cullen was showing some nice touches and his cross from the right picked out Altidore beyond the far post, but he failed to find Garcia with a header back across goal.

Cullen was also booked late on for a foul on Hendry Thomas.

Jason Scotland should have made it 4-1 with five minutes to go, but he blasted into the side-netting.

Wigan did add a fourth in added time. Sinclair carried the ball into the area and somehow beat Myhill with a shot from a tight angle.

Garcia went close to pulling a goal back with the final kick of the game, but his volley from Altidore's left-wing cross was beaten away by Pollitt.
