Tigers Claim Billy Bly Trophy With Comfortable Win
Hull City opened up their pre-season campaign with a 4-0 win over North Ferriby United at Church Road in the annual Billy Bly Memorial Trophy match on Monday evening.
As expected, Phil Brown named an entirely different side for each half in a game restricted to 35 minutes each way. Tigers fans were given a first chance to see new signing Geovanni in action as he lined up in the first half team. The Ferriby side contained seven players who had previously represented the Tigers at some stage of their career.
The first shot of the game came from Geovanni but the Brazilian was off target when Will Atkinson played a Dean Windass knock down into his path. City were ahead after just 6 minutes when a through ball found Dean Marney's perfectly timed run and he slotted a right foot shot past former Tigers keeper Steve Wilson.
Windass then twice went close, curling a free kick wide and then meeting Craig Fagan's cross from the right with a diving header that produced a brilliant block from Wilson.
The Ferriby keeper then held an Atkinson shot but he was beaten again in the 15th minute. Windass beat the offside trap and squared the ball for Atkinson to apply the finishing touch from close range.
Ryan France almost produced an early candidate for goal of the season when Marney's corner was cleared to the full back and he struck a right foot shot from fully 35 yards which Wilson managed to parry up into the air, the ball bouncing down on top of the crossbar.
City were forced into a re-shuffle when Matt Plummer was withdrawn with a facial injury. France switched to centre back, John Welsh dropped to right back and Nick McNamara took over in midfield.
Geovanni whetted the appetite of the watching Tigers fans with some neat touches and a couple of skillful runs but he was unable to find the finish to beat Wilson. Ferriby produced their best move of the game just before the break when David Cooke crossed from the right but Andy Jackson's near post shot was held by Matt Duke.
Half time: North Ferriby United 0 Hull City 2
The new look Tigers continued where the first half side had ended with Nicky Featherstone releasing Caleb Folan but Wilson was quickly out to block at the edge of his box.
Ferriby replied with a speculative effort from Gary Bradshaw hoping to find Boaz Myhill off his line but the shot was off target. The Tigers added a third after 52 minutes when the Ferriby defence failed to deal with a Bryan Hughes corner and Folan's header gave Michael Turner the chance to fire a right foot shot low past Wilson.
Featherstone again created a chance for Folan but from a good position the striker blazed high and wide. The youngster was again involved with some neat footwork in the Ferriby box which drew a challenge that should have earned City a penalty but referee Carl Boyeson opted for a goal kick instead.
The Tigers completed the scoring a minute from the end when Folan and Ian Ashbee combined on the left for Dawson's cross to be met with a diving header from Nicky Barmby. There was still time for Folan to work an opening for himself but Wilson produced a good low save.
After the match the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy was presented by Roy Bly, son of the Tigers legend, to City skipper Ian Ashbee.
