Hull City are out of the Carling Cup at the first attempt after losing in extra time to Championship new boys Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, the final score 2-1 to the hosts.

Dean Windass had given the Tigers an early lead, but the spirited Swans hit back after the break before a Jordi Gomez penalty won the game in the 105th minute.

Matt Duke had forced the extra time after saving a penalty in added time at the end of the 90 minutes.

As expected, Phil Brown changed all eleven of his starting line-up from Saturday's Premier League draw at Blackburn Rovers.

Four days before his 17th birthday, Liam Cooper made his senior debut alongside Wayne Brown at centre back.

Brown was also handed the captain's armband in the absence of Ian Ashbee.

Bryan Hughes and Ryan France started in the middle of midfield while Bernard Mendy and Nathan Doyle were given the chance to impress in the full-back berths. Matt Duke started in goal.

Caleb Folan and Dean Windass were paired together up front with Nick Barmby and Peter Halmosi operating on the wings.

Incidentally, Deano made his Tigers league debut at Swansea in October 1991 - less than two months after Liam Copper was born.

On our first visit to the impressive Liberty Stadium, a small pocket of City fans had made the long jorney to South Wales and were tucked away in one corner of a sparsely populated stadium.

It was the Tigers who started the better of the two sides with Windass missing a decent opportunity at the far post following a corner.

Windass, however, made no mistake in the 11th minute as he put the Tigers ahead.

Barmby's low ball to the edge of the box was beautifully dummied by Folan and after turning his marker, Windass finished low past Dorus de Vries from eight yards.

City were looking dangerous going forward and when Folan picked up possession following Matty Collins' mistake, his cross was flicked wide by France.

Despite their superiority, the Tigers had a lucky escape on 21 minutes when Guillem Bauza was upended by Duke in the box.

However, the referee had already pulled play back for a foul on Brown.

Moments later, Cooper's foul gave Swansea a free kick in a central position 25 yards from goal, but Jordi Gomez blasted an effort straight into the wall.

The home side were now enjoying a decent little spell, although Duke had yet to be seriously tested.

Shaun MacDonald's run and cross in the 26th minute found Bouza at the near post, but his header was deflected wide by Cooper.

Windass had a great chance to double City's lead four minutes later after latching on to Folan's flick, but he scuffed a shot wide of the far post.

City threatened again five minutes before the break when Hughes' corner picked out Cooper at the far post, but the youngster headed wide under pressure.

One of the more frustrating aspects of the first half was the number of times City were caught offside.

Nine times in the opening 45 minutes the away side were stopped by the linesman's flag, with Folan the main culprit.

Half Time: Tigers 1-0 Swansea

The second half was slow to get going, although the offside trend continued with Windass firing wide after the flag had been raised.

Swansea missed a glorious chance to equalise on 55 minutes.

The referee played advantage following Brown's wild tackle on Andrea Orlandi, allowing substitute Gorka Pintado, who had only just come on, to make progress into the box.

He pulled the ball back for Bauza, but he blasted over from ten yards. Brown was then booked for his earlier foul.

Moments later, Bauza found himself through on goal, but Duke came off his line to touch the ball away from the striker's feet and City breathed again.

Windass then sent Folan racing away, but he was caught by a defender before Duke produced a wonderful save low to his left after Pintado had connected with Orlandi's corner.

City were continuing to live dangerously and Doyle was forced to clear off the line after another Swansea set-piece had been headed goalwards.

Swansea got the goal their play deserved on 63 minutes. Gomez crossed for Pintado, who had escaped his marker and headed home into the bottom corner.

The home side were well on top at this point and Mendy was booked after crudely halting another fast-flowing attack.

Marlon King, who had replaced Windass just seconds before Swansea's equaliser, had a chance in the 66th minute after being played in by Hughes, but despite knocking the ball past the goalkeeper, a covering defender ensured it didn't cross the line.

City's second change of the night saw Nicky Featherstone replace Barmby on the right.

Swansea were continuing to attack and when Pintado put in a low cross from the right, Cooper's attempted clearance hit Bauza and flew wide.

At the other end, Featherstone played King into the box, but rather than pulling the ball back for Hughes he went across goal and saw the ball drift out for a goal kick.

With City starting to look tired, Halmosi was booked for a needless foul on MacDonald.

Swansea went close to a winner four minutes from time when Pintado burst past Cooper before firing a low shot against the post.

Duke then had to save at the feet of Fabian Brandy as the home side piled forward in search of a second goal.

With the game into added time, Swansea were awarded a penalty when Brown brought Brandy down.

Pintado stepped up to take it but was denied by a magnificent save by Duke.

City then created two chances of their own. First, Hughes saw his diving header saved by de Vries before France fired over from inside the box.

Full Time [90 minutes] Tigers 1-1 Swansea

City made a change at the start of extra time with Michael Turner replacing Cooper at the back.

The Tigers won a corner two minutes into extra time. Hughes delievered following a short routine with Halmosi, but de Vries claimed the cross well.

Featherstone then shot wide following good hold-up play by King.

A touch of cramp for Doyle saw a change in City's set-up as France moved to right back, Mendy to left back with Doyle going into the middle of midfield.

Swansea were awarded another penalty in the final minute of the first period of extra time when Turner brought MacDonald down.

This time Gomez stepped up to take it and sent Duke the wrong way with a cool finish.

Extra Time Half Time: Tigers 1-2 Swansea

Folan missed the best chance of the game five minutes into the second period of extra time, somehow heading over from three yards under no pressure.

Apart from that chance, City were struggling to create anything going forward whilst several Swansea players were suffering with cramp.

With time running out, Turner was thrown up front as City looked for an equaliser.

The chance never came.
