Juniors End Season On A High

Posted on: Mon 26 Apr 2010

Hull City Juniors rounded off their championship winning season with a 3-2 success at Scunthorpe United.

With Olly West having been injured in the defeat to York and first choice keeper Bill Ward also injured, Joe Cracknell stepped up from the Tigers impressive Under 15 squad. That was one of six changes to Billy Russell's side with Adam White, Jules Gabbiadini, Ray Ford, Johnny Margetts and Joel Shortland also coming into the side.

With the league title already secured the Tigers were looking to conclude their season in style and they took the lead in the 20th minute when Fran McCaffery's cross from the right was returned into the box by Shortland for Margetts to head past Iron keeper Peter Crook.

City were forced into a change when White hobbled off with Jordan Holt taking over at left back and Conor Townsend switching to right back.

It was Holt's free kick which provided a chance for Margetts but Crook blocked his effort before Joe Cooper shot wide from Margetts' left wing cross.

The Iron levelled in the 35th minute when Aron Wint cut in from the right and sent a left footer flying past Cracknell from outside the box.

Jordan Thewlis then shot just past the post before James Thomas netted in the 41st minute when he was first to Scott Matthews' free kick to head into the City net.

The Iron almost increased their lead just after the break when City failed to clear a corner and Joe Magiure's shot was turned away by Cracknell.

Ford was unlucky not to find the back of the net when his thunderous free kick almost took Crook by surprise, the Iron keeper tipping the ball against the crossbar and then gathering the rebound.

McCaffery made a couple of good runs down the right, the first saw substitute Danny Emerton's shot blocked by Richard Dean and the second was headed over by Ford.

Cracknell then produced a good block to deny Thomas before City drew level in the 64th minute. Again McCaffery created the chance down the right and his cross was blasted into the net by Margetts for his second of the game.

City took the lead just five minutes later with a solo goal from Emerton. He took possession in midfield, beat a couple of defenders and then lobbed the advancing keeper. Although his initial effort bounced back off the post he was first to the rebound to score into an empty net and ensure that the Tigers ended the season on a winning note.
