Youth Alliance North East Conference champions Hull City Juniors suffered only their second league defeat of the season when York City claimed a 2-1 victory at Winterton on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers were without the services of top scorer Mark Cullen who had been called up into the first team squad and so Fran McCaffery partnered Joe Fox up front. Defender Danny East, who has not played since picking up an injury in the very first game of the season, was included amongst the City substitutes.
The top two teams in the league cancelled each other out in the opening stages before the Minstermen grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck midway through the first period.
Dominic Brown gave them a 25th minute lead when his header from Jed Vale's cross bounced in off the post and just a minute later it was another Vale cross from the left that gave Kingsley Wetherald the chance to power a header past Olly West.
Gavan Holohan went close to reducing the deficit but his left foot shot was inches too high.
There was then a lengthy delay when West came to claim a bouncing ball and was in collision with a York player which left him motionless on the ground. With the Tigers' keeper complaining of neck and shoulder pains no unnecessary risks were taken and the player was not moved until an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.
Although City had a keeper in Bill Ward on the bench, he was carrying an injury and so it was defender Lee Wright who took over in goal with Richard Overment coming on up front and Fox moving to right back.
Play eventually resumed after a half hour delay but neither side created a worthwhile chance in the remainder of the half.

The Tigers were in desperate need of a goal to get back into the game and they had the ideal opportunity when McCaffery was sent clear but he pushed the ball just too far ahead and York keeper Ben White was quickly out to claim.
Conor Townsend fired over from McCaffery's pull back before skipper Sonny Bradley met Danny Emerton's corner with a header which had to be clawed out from under the crossbar by White.
Overment was then unlucky to see his header deflected over only for a goal kick to be awarded and Joe Cooper's strike was off target.
With the Tigers pressing forward stand in keeper Wright was largely untroubled but when he was called into action he easily held Wetherald's strike.
Cooper and Emerton were both off target for the Tigers before they finally pulled a goal back in the 90th minute. Townsend was bundled over in the box by Jamie Hopcutt and Emerton scored from the spot. However, it was too little too late for the Tigers and although it was York who took the points, it was the Tigers who take the league title.
