Hull City's FA Youth Cup run came to an end with a 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Church Road.
City conceded at the beginning and end of the first half before Mark Cullen gave them hope with a well taken goal.
But Palace pushed on to perhaps give the scoreline an unfair reflection.
The Tigers got off to the worst possible start as Palace took the lead inside the opening minute. Some neat play around the edge of the box culminated in a cross coming in from the right for the unmarked Joe Goldsmith to head home at the far post.
City responded well and when Cullen was sent racing through by Gavan Holohan, the striker appeared to be tripped by Palace goalkeeper Charlie Mann. Had a free kick been given, the keeper would surely have been sent off, but the referee waved play on to the amazement of everybody of a black and amber persuasion.
The home side settled well after their early shock and came close to levelling on 26 minutes. Mann failed to collect a free kick, allowing the ball to drop to Sonny Bradley, but his shot struck the outside of the post.
An altercation between Richard Overment and Palace defender Jerry Nnamani at a City free kick resulted in both players being booked before Ray Ford saw his shot well saved by Mann.
City were pressing well, but they were undone in added time at the end of the first half. A Palace free kick midway inside the City half was sent into the penalty area by Kieran Kenlock. It caught City keeper Billy Ward out and drifted over his head and into the net for 2-0.
Half Time: Tigers 0-2 Palace
There was a real purpose about City at the start of the second half as they looked to get back into the game.
Joe Fox saw a shot saved before Ford fired over from a good position after being played in by Danny Emerton.
Fox volleyed wide before Cullen brought his side right back into it with a well taken goal. Picking up possession, the striker ran at his man before placing a left-foot shot into the bottom corner of the net.
But no sooner had City got back into it, they fell 3-1 behind. A cross from the right by Kenlock wasn't dealt with and in nipped Goldsmith to head home his second of the game.
Cullen almost reduced the arrears again moments later, but he headed Bradley's long ball into the hands of Mann.
City looked to be running out of gas and a further goal for Palace in added time only served to rub salt into the wound. Jack Randall's mazy run saw him cut in from the left before firing a shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area.
