Youngsters Continue Good Form
Skipper Sonny Bradley and top scorer Mark Cullen both hit the target as Hull City Juniors defeated Chesterfield 2-0 at Sheffield University.
Billy Russell was forced into a late change to his side when Lee Wright dropped out through illness but Dean Deagle returned from injury to slot in alongside Bradley and Danny Wilkinson as the Tigers retained a back three. There were two other changes to the side that were held to a 1-1 draw at Lincoln with Tom Bennett and Darragh Satelle coming in for Joe Cooper and Ray Ford.
The game kicked off in damp and misty conditions and it was the hosts who almost took an early lead. Sam Smith's corner was only half cleared and Tendayi Darikwa's deflected shot brought a smart diving save from Bill Ward in the City goal.
The Tigers replied with a break down the left from Danny Emerton and when he cut inside his curling shot was tipped over the bar by Spireites keeper Scott Webb.
Emerton then turned provider when his pass inside found Conor Townend whose left foot strike was turned away for a corner by Webb.
The Chesterfield keeper again denied Townend just a minute later by keeping out his 25 yard free kick and as Cullen attempted to get to the rebound he was penalised for his challenge on the keeper.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Townend's free kick picked out the unmarked Bradley at the far post and he sent a diving header past Webb.
Satelle sent a free kick over the bar as the Tigers continued to press and then Townend's pass released Cullen down the left channel. He worked the ball on to his right foot and smashed a shot goalward only to see Webb produce a superb save to tip the ball over his bar.
Chesterfield created a couple of chances for Jimmy Adcock but both efforts were wide of Ward's right hand post.
City doubled their lead in the 36th minute from a Townend corner. Bradley headed the ball back across goal for Cullen whose left foot strike brought him his 17th goal of the season. However, the City striker was then off target as he headed over from a Wilkinson free kick.
Half Time: Chesterfield Juniors 0 Hull City Juniors 2
By the start of the second period the mist had cleared only to be replaced by rain.
Joe Fox chested down Deagle's pass into the path of Emerton and his right foot drive was well saved by Webb low to his right.
Chesterfield then came more into the game and Ward was forced to parry Smith's left foot strike from the edge of the box and then held Darikwa's header high to his left.
Adcock also curled a right foot shot wide whilst for the Tigers a Fox strike was comfortably held by Webb.
The Tigers preserved their clean sheet in the closing minutes thanks to Ward's smart save from Chris Tingay's right foot strike.
The young Tigers will be aiming to extend their nine match unbeaten run next Saturday when they take on Burton Albion in a game that will now take place at the Ideal Standard training ground on County Road North.
