Following the 5-0 victory over Burton Albion a week earlier Billy Russell was forced into making one change with Ryan Fallowfield missing out due to injury. Tom Davie came into the side that was also missing Max Clark and Eoghan McCawl due to international duty.
There were few chances in the opening period but Danny Chambers saw his right foot strike from outside the box deflected for a corner.
Davie then sent Chambers away down the left and his low cross was met by Sam O’Connor but he was denied by a superb block from Rovers keeper Aaron Busby.
Christopher Whincup fired a left foot shot wide but the visitors opened the scoring in the 38th minute. City conceded a free kick on the edge of the box and although Evan Finnegan’s left foot strike was straight at Rory Watson the City keeper let the ball squirm through his grasp and into the net.

The Tigers went in search of an equaliser at the start of the second period but Matty Dixon headed over from O’Connor’s cross.
Watson then held Finnegan’s long range drive after Mitchell Lund played a free kick short to him.
City were unlucky not to level when Jack Barlow’s 25 yard strike smacked against the crossbar and shortly afterwards the woodwork again denied the Tigers. From a Sam Topliss cross Chambers saw his effort blocked and O’Connor’s follow up was deflected onto the post by a Rovers defender before being claimed by Busby.
Doncaster added a crucial second goal in the 83rd minute but again it came from a defensive mistake. City conceded possession deep in their own half and Harry Middleton released Alex Peterson to fire past Watson from inside the box.
Rovers could have added to their lead but Middleton’s long range strike was deflected over by Ben Clappison and Ryan Burnyeat headed wide from Finnegan’s cross when he really should have hit the target.
