Tom Cairney described the Tigers' 3-1 victory over North Ferriby as a 'satisfactory night all round'.
Steve Bruce’s side were made to work hard for their win, coming from behind to retain the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy thanks to goals from
Aaron Mclean, Matty Fryatt (pen) and Jay Simpson.
Speaking after the game, Cairney said: "Obviously you can't read too much into results at this stage of the season but it's always nice to get a win in your first game.
"The lads looked fit which is what it's all about and every game we play now helps with fitness levels ahead of the opening game of the season.
"Our week in Portugal was very beneficial from a fitness perspective and it's a case of building on the hard work that we put in while we were across there.
"It was good to blow the cobwebs off though as the boys got a good workout from the game.
"Full credit to North Ferriby because they produced a good performance and gave us a real test - like they always do.
"Obviously with it being the first game of pre-season, everything wasn't perfect but, on the whole, it was a satisfactory night all round."
