The Keyingham Community First Responders are our first Community Heroes of the season.
Around 15 members of the Keyingham Community First Responders will be guests at our first match of 2012/13 season after being awarded the accolade of Community Heroes thanks to their efforts to help save lives.
The Community First Responders are trained volunteers who respond to Category “A” life-threatening emergency calls within a three mile radius of Keyingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire where there is a population of 8000 residents. The Responders deal with medical emergencies including cardiac arrests, heart attacks, seizures and strokes, stabilising patients and increasing their chance of recovery.
The Keyingham Community First Respondents have been nominated as Community Heroes by the former co-ordinator of the group, Barney Cornwell. They will be guests at our first home game of the season against Brighton on August 18 with tickets courtesy of East Stand club sponsor Neil Hudgell Solicitors, specialists in claims for personal injury and medical negligence.
Barney said: “The group is fantastic; they go out in all weathers to get to their patients. It is a rewarding community role and none of the members expect anything in return except to save lives.
“The group is equipped, trained and resupplied by the Ambulance Service. In winter they scrape ice off their cars at all times of the day and night but never let that stop them from getting on with their jobs. These people are real community heroes and deserve a reward for all of their hard work.”
Not satisfied with serving their own community, they have raised funds to extend the project to neighbouring villages, and are passionate about developing things further. Community First Responders operate across Yorkshire and train their members in life-saving skills.
Most of the volunteers in the Keyingham Community First Responders work shifts on a rota alongside their full-time jobs, ensuring the service is covered 24hours a day, seven days a week. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service recently awarded the Keyingham First Responders the Best Performing Group in the Yorkshire area.
Duncan Kirk, the present Co-ordinator of the Keyingham Community First Respondents said: “The team is grateful to be given the Community Heroes award. They put in an enormous amount of effort every week, often working through the night. I am delighted to see that they are receiving recognition for the work that they do and we all look forward to attending the match in August.”
