Few Would Have Matched Us

Steve Bruce felt that few teams could have lived with the Tigers during the opening 45 minutes against Millwall on Saturday.

Bruce’s side produced one of the finest displays seen from a City side as they tore the Lions apart to go in 4-0 ahead at half time.

Although the second half performance didn’t live up to the same standard, the Tigers continued to dominate with only Darius Henderson’s consolation goal for the visitors providing a blot on the landscape.

But it was the opening half that was the talk of the town on Saturday night and Bruce was hugely satisfied with what he saw.

“Some of the football in the first half was terrific and we moved the ball very quickly,” said Bruce.

“The interchanging between Aluko, Quinn and Koren was excellent. I have to mention Dudgeon as well because he was terrific at left wing-back.

“We played some good stuff and there wouldn’t have been many teams that could have stayed with us playing like that.

“The only disappointing thing for me was the second half because the one thing we wanted to guard against was taking our foot off the pedal. But how often does it happen when you’re in cruise control and you just step away from it a little bit?

“But then again, we had three, four or five chances to get a fifth goal and I think if we had got the fifth, we would have gone on for six, seven or eight. We had 26 attempts on goal and in this league, that doesn’t happen very often.”

Saturday’s win put City fourth in the Championship table, just a point behind leaders Blackburn who remain the only side to have beaten the Tigers so far.

With three wins and a draw from the opening five games, Bruce is satisfied with the start to the season and has been pleased to note improvements with each game.

“We’ve gone along quietly and done okay,” added the City manager.

“We should still be unbeaten as far as I’m concerned, but we’ve gradually got better during the five games so far and the players are enjoying the system and enjoying playing.

“We’re seeing some good performances. A lot of players are playing at their peak, players like Jay Simpson, Dudgeon, Aluko, Quinn – wherever you look players are putting a performance in.”
